Sealants

A sealant is a plastic material that is applied to the chewing surface of the molars, and is used to protect teeth from plaque.  In order to maximize effectiveness, sealants are applied to the hard to brush, cavity-prone areas, called pits that occur naturally in teeth.

Sealants are most often applied to newly erupted molars in children.  Less common, sealants can also be beneficial for adults that have a high rate of tooth decay.  Sealants are easily applied, non-invasive, and typically are long-lasting as long as hard foods, candy, and sticky foods are avoided.
