Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child see the dentist for the first time?
Most dentists and hygienists prefer to see children, for the first time around age 3.  However, should a problem arise, your child should be seen immediately.

How often should I brush my teeth?
It is recommended that you brush at least twice a day and floss daily.

Is there a treatment for bad breath (halitosis)?
Halitosis can be caused by dry mouth poor dental hygiene, gum disease, certain foods, and tobacco or alcohol use. Treatment for halitosis includes a thorough cleaning.  If halitosis still persists, other treatments may be discussed.

Are smoking and dipping really that bad for my teeth?
Yes!  Tobacco users are more likely to have periodontal (gum) disease than non-tobacco users.  Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.  Also, tobacco use can cause mouth cancer.

What should I do if I have a toothache?
Contact your dentist immediately.  Usually your dentist will prescribe you antibiotic and analgesic medications to reduce the infection and pain.  Schedule an appointment to treat the problem tooth.

What is the difference in a cap or crown?
There is no difference, the terms cap and crown define the same thing.

What is a bridge?
A fixed bridge is used to replace a missing tooth.  The teeth on either sides of the missing tooth are shaved down, and impressions are taken.  The teeth are then replaced with a porcelain bridge that replaces the missing tooth.  The benefit of a fixed bridge is that is looks like your natural teeth, and it is not removable.
