Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)
Bruxism is a condition that effects around 15 percent of people. Most commonly, people grind their teeth or clench their jaws in their sleep, so it often goes undetected. Typically, people are unaware of the damage they have caused to their teeth until their dentist diagnoses the problem. If caught early enough, bruxism can be treated before it causes irreversable damage.
Causes of Teeth Grinding:
1. Improper alignment of the top and bottom teeth.
2. A sleep disorder
3. Stress
If bruxism is not treated teeth can wear down and chip, worsen TMJ dysfunction, and cause teeth to be sensitive to hot and cold. Treatment usually consists of a bruxism splint that prevents grinding on natural tooth surfaces.
Symptoms of Teeth Grinding:
- Teeth grinding, during sleep
- Jaw pain, headaches or earache
- Sensitive teeth
- Pain radiating down neck; especially in the morning
- Clenching of the jaws
